The Cottage is a part of a larger body of work titled The Eighth Dimension, focusing on the ideas surrounding spirits and their relationship to photography. Photography is thought to be the only way to see the spirit world and the artist’s mother, a psychic medium, has influenced the decision to explore Philbin’s mother’s stories with images of places where her mother has done clearings. The overall body of work digs into the spirit world – a world we cannot see, but is always there.

 

Monica Philbin is an emerging photographer originally from Long Island, NY, now living in Dracut, MA. Philbin’s artistic practice focuses on abstract ideas, as well as experimentation with the medium as a tool to connect with herself and her family. Philbin has a BFA from Purchase College, SUNY in Photography and is currently a second-year MFA candidate at Lesley University’s College of Art and Design in the Photography and Integrated Media program.
